It’s Thursday, August 27th. Wyndham handed 5,000 hotels the same AI platform for free. The operators who configured it cleared $200,000. The ones who switched it on and walked away cleared nothing. Same software, same brand, same price.
Forrester says 55% of employers regret their AI layoffs. Economy hotels filled 4.6 more points of rooms last half and still lost money on them. Travelodge grew revenue 4.2% and lost its CEO anyway.

GOING DEEPER
1. Apollo: AI-Exposed Wages Grew 6.7% Slower
Apollo tracked 321 occupations over a decade and found employment in AI-exposed roles held steady while wage growth fell 6.7 points behind everyone else. The lower the pay, the bigger the gap: 10.7% in the bottom quartile, 24.3% in service work. Customer service reps are on the exposed list, which puts your reservations team and your front desk squarely inside it.
🔑 Key takeaway: If your AI business case promises fewer people, it will miss, because that is not where the money is showing up. Rebuild it around what your existing team gets done in a shift. Then pull your front desk and reservations pay bands and compare them to your market, because compressed wages in your lowest-paid roles turn into a turnover bill long before they turn into savings. 2. Airbnb's AI Now Resolves 45% of Support Inquiries
Airbnb started at the bottom of the funnel on purpose. While competitors raced to put AI into search, Chesky pointed his team at customer service because it was the hardest problem in the business. The assistant now closes nearly 45% of inquiries with no human involved, up from a third at the end of last year, running in 50-plus languages. Support cost per booking fell roughly 16% year over year. Search came second, and only after the hard part worked.
🔑 Key takeaway: Chesky's own line was that AI feels like magic but is not, and that being good at AI means being good at data and infrastructure first. Airbnb spent years cleaning up its data warehouse before any of this shipped. Pick the ugliest, most repetitive volume in your operation, front desk calls, reservation changes, the same six questions every night, and fix that before you touch anything a guest sees. That is where the cost per booking actually moves. Read More →
3. VAI Resort's Commercial Lead Built 12 Internal Apps on a $200-a-Month AI Subscription
Bill Legrand, executive director of commercial applications at VAI Resort, drew a hard line on what he would and would not build. Property management, payment processing, core CRM and POS stay with vendors, because those systems are hardened and already integrated with each other. Everything in the long tail is now fair game. He built a tool that pulls all of VAI's Salesforce and Marketing Cloud data through the API, encrypts it in flight and drops it into their own storage, then did the same for Mailchimp. When a vendor quoted six months to implement single sign-on for a commercial application VAI had purchased, Legrand and one IT staffer built SAML into their own tool in about four hours. He spends roughly 20% of his time on this and pays $200 a month for the coding subscription.
🔑 Key takeaway: The blocker is data, not engineering. Legrand pulled every SOP into a database expecting to query them conversationally, and got answers that were partly right with unrelated fragments mixed in. The documents followed a template but were written as statements rather than procedures, so the tool could not parse them. He rebuilt the project as a standardization engine that splits inconsistent SOPs into discrete procedural steps, shows the original author what changed and why, and versions the result. Before funding any AI project, pick one document set your team already relies on and check whether it is written consistently enough for software to read. Read More →
