It’s Thursday, September 10th. Ok it’s not hotel tech per se but holy crap have you seen the Tesla Cybercab stuff going around social media? I’ve taken my fair share of Waymo’s but for some reason this feels next level (sorry Elon haters). Marriott CEO Capuano says AI hits distribution first. Meta launched a flight booking agent with Duffel. STR says the fancier the hotel, the thinner the margin. First Hospitality reveals their upsell strategy and data. Reddit lost 86% of its ChatGPT citations in a single day. On a darker note, another AI engineer just left Anthropic basically saying that we’re barreling towards extinction - yeesh.
🎥 Video of the week: We walk through how Novotel Geelong used Duve to drive a 58% online check-in rate, save roughly 8 hours of reservation work per week, and increase upsell revenue by 200%+ by connecting check-in, messaging, and upselling across the guest journey.

GOING DEEPER
1. Marriott CEO Says AI's Biggest Impact So Far Is Distribution
Marriott says AI is changing how travelers discover hotels before it changes anything inside the building, and it is treating that as a content supply problem by loading its portfolio into Google and OpenAI. For hoteliers, that means the largest company in the industry has decided that showing up in an AI shortlist depends on what data the model can see about your property. Any hotel whose PMS, CRS, or content platform cannot get room, rate, and amenity data into those models will be invisible where a growing share of shopping now starts.
🔑 Key takeaway: AI search visibility is a data feed question. Marriott is winning the shortlist because it is supplying more structured content to the models than its peers, and it has third-party reports to prove it. Owners should ask their brand and their vendors the same question: what exactly are we feeding Google and OpenAI, and how does it compare. Read More →
2. Meta Launches Agentic Flight Booking, Are Hotels Next?
Meta shipped a consumer AI agent that completes flight bookings end to end by connecting to a single travel infrastructure specialist, Duffel, rather than building an OTA. Hotels are absent because no one has solved live rate and inventory access for agents at scale, which means the hotel connector seat in this architecture is still open. Whoever fills it, whether a CRS, a channel manager, or a new intermediary, will control how a large share of agent-driven hotel demand reaches your property and on what commission terms.
🔑 Key takeaway: The agent does not need to own inventory. Meta handed the entire transaction to Duffel, and that pattern will repeat for hotels. The question for operators is which connector will hold that seat and whether your property's rates and availability will be in it. Read More →
3. First Hospitality Says Time-Based Upsells Sell Best Before Arrival
STR data presented at the Hotel Data Conference shows that adding revenue streams tends to add labor cost faster than profit at higher-class hotels, so the streams worth adding are the ones with low delivery cost. First Hospitality and Plusgrade laid out which those are: early check-in, late checkout, prepaid F&B credits, and self-serve F&B, all of which convert best when offered before the guest reaches the desk. Hotels that still rely on the front desk agent to pitch upgrades are leaving the highest-margin dollars uncollected at the exact moment the guest is least willing to pay.
🔑 Key takeaway: If you don’t have upselling software like Canary or FPG, you are 100% leaving money on the table. Pull your early check-in, late checkout, and F&B credit revenue for the last 90 days and check what share was sold before arrival versus at the desk. If the desk is carrying it, put those offers into your pre-arrival messaging this month and set a per-hotel incentive with public recognition. Read More →
