It’s Thursday, October 1st. Wyndham's AI now answers every call, Hilton swears the front desk is staying, and Accor expects AI to displace a third of its network's workforce. Choice spent $130M on RV campsites at wineries and farms, and Mews just won Accor's bar tab at 850+ hotels. Meta's Muse wants to book your rooms through Expedia, OpenAI launched agents that never clock out, and Airbnb's new AI search left hotels off the guest list. Somewhere in all this, hotels learned they can charge guests for the right to change their minds.

🎙️ Shout-out to Simona Eicher, owner of Hotel ÜJA, who joined me on the podcast to show what happens when the next generation takes over an under-digitized hotel, brings in modern technology and rethinks the traditional 14-hour-a-day hotelier playbook.

TOGETHER WITH GOURMET MARKETING

Most hotels will build their 2027 marketing plan by nudging last year's numbers, which assumes guests still search one way. Gourmet Marketing treats AI as five separate channels and says to answer four questions first: which AI engines find you, who owns your reviews, which channels produce stayed revenue, and what you're funding to cut OTA commissions. ChatGPT and Google's AI Mode agreed on just 18% of recommended hotels across 695 searches. "AI" may need more than one line in the spreadsheet.

GOING DEEPER

Spire Built a Team So Owners Stop Getting Surprised

Owners have read plenty of month-end reports explaining what already went wrong. Spire Hospitality launched a Strategic Asset Performance division that puts financial planning, IT, hotel systems and AI under newly promoted SVP Shozib Khan, with a mandate for predictive forecasting and less manual work. Khan says the goal is to spot the opportunity before it shows up in a month-end report. Owners will be watching to see if those reports get any less dramatic. Read More →

Hotels Are Spending on AI Faster Than It Cuts Costs

Hoteliers have stopped asking whether to buy AI and started asking how much. Canary Technologies surveyed 404 hotel IT decision-makers: 67% expect IT budgets to rise at least 10% next year, and 85% will put more than 5% of that budget toward AI. Among hotels already using AI, 64% report staff time savings and 37% report more room revenue, but only 20% report lower operating costs. The AI line is growing faster than the savings line. OpenAI Launches Dots, Always on Agents

Your back office may be getting a coworker that never takes lunch. OpenAI launched dots, always-on agents with their own cloud computer that plug into 4,000+ apps and take requests in ChatGPT, Slack and Teams. It is also piloting specialist versions for procurement, invoicing and customer support. One tester's dot noticed he had forgotten to invoice a client, prepared the bill and sent it once he approved... accounts receivable, meet your new intern. Read More →

Meta Launches Muse for SMBs

Meta's AI agent is three weeks old and already working both sides of the front desk. Expedia will sell hotels inside Muse in the U.S. as merchant of record, though no launch date is set. On Sept. 29, Meta launched Muse for Small Business, which plugs into Meta ad accounts, professional Instagram and Facebook profiles, Slack and Intuit. Evercore expects Muse to hit 100 million users in 6 to 12 months... your guests may meet it before your marketing team does. Read More →

Hopper’s ‘Cancel for Any Reason’ to Booking Engines

Hotels found a way to make nonrefundable rates refundable and still get paid for it. Hopper Technology Solutions switched on Cancel for Any Reason inside Aven Hospitality's booking engine. Guests add it after picking a room and can cancel before check-in for up to a 100% refund, while HTS handles the PMS cancellation, the refund and the resale. HTS says 62% of travelers would buy it at checkout. The cancellation policy stays strict... the guest just pays to skip it. Read More →

PODCAST SPOTLIGHT
Hotel ÜJA CEO on Buying and Digitizing Boomer Hotels

A lot of independent hotels are about to change hands as longtime owners retire and that creates a real opportunity for the next generation.

Simona Eicher’s story at Hotel ÜJA is a great example: she bought an under-digitized hotel, brought in modern software, better branding, stronger direct booking and a more efficient operating model, and showed that owning a small hotel doesn’t have to mean signing up for 14-hour days.

The bigger idea is that there are still plenty of fundamentally good hotel assets being run with outdated technology, and the next generation can create meaningful value by buying them at sensible valuations and modernizing the business.
