It’s Thursday, November 5th. Expedia’s AI now answers guests’ questions about your hotel, then offers them another night. Binance lost $6.34 billion after an engineer ran a fake job interview’s take-home “assignment.” Choice, meanwhile, says its hotels near data centers grew RevPAR 400 basis points faster than the rest of its system. And Booking just took a $1 billion hit over an FTC case about ads that looked like hotels’ own sites.

ThinkReservations ThinkGrowth webinar: Google Hotel Ads with Cornell's Chris Anderson

Cornell professor Chris Anderson tested Google Hotel Ads across 26 independent hotels. Free booking links lifted total demand 11%, and adding paid placement pushed the lift to 28%. Some of those paid clicks were ones the free links sitting just below would have won anyway.

In the ThinkGrowth webinar from ThinkReservations, Anderson breaks down when paid placement creates new demand and when it just reshuffles traffic.

  • ✅ Free links first: free booking links cut the share of bookings going to third parties by roughly 20%.

  • ✅ When to pay: timing, device, availability and the rate beside Booking.com and Expedia decide whether paid placement adds bookings.

  • ✅ Direct-only offers: how targeted offers compete without giving up the rest of your distribution strategy.

GOING DEEPER

Booking Takes $1B Hit Over FTC Hotel Ads Case

The lookalike hotel ad case now has a price. Booking Holdings cut third-quarter revenue by $900 million and accrued a further $100 million loss over a possible FTC complaint against Priceline, and its filing says the FTC may seek more than $1 billion. No settlement is agreed. The partner in question, per Reuters, is Guest Reservations. Room nights still rose 7% to 345 million... the fake hotel website was the expensive channel after all.

Expedia's AI Now Answers Guests for Your Hotel

Expedia's AI now answers for the front desk. Its October 28 fall release adds more than 30 features across Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo. Property Expert is live in the U.S.: a traveler taps "Ask" on a property page, and on Expedia the answer now draws on the guest's own reservation too. Hotels.com also offers guests an extension near the end of a stay. Expedia did not say whether hotels can see or correct the answers... the extra night is an OTA upsell now.

Fake Job Interview Led to $6.34B Binance Hack

Binance's post-mortem reads like a hiring process. In June a wallet engineer installed a tampered tool found through a search engine. In September a software engineer, approached on a legitimate job platform by a fake Project Director, ran an interview "assignment" carrying 0-day malware. On October 29 attackers used that access to move about $6.34 billion. Binance calls it "a sophisticated, multi-stage campaign"... if it got past Binance's security team, it can get past a hotel's HR inbox.

Choice Hotels Near Data Centers Beat by 400bps

Choice Hotels found a new road warrior: the data center. CEO Dom Dragisich says about 30% of its U.S. hotels sit within 10 miles of a major data center, and those hotels grew RevPAR more than 400 basis points faster than the rest of the system. Systemwide U.S. RevPAR rose 3.8% in Q3, and Choice bought RV membership company Harvest Hosts for about $130 million... the guest in the hard hat is paying the rate.

ChatGPT Search Hits 20% of Google's Volume

The second-biggest search engine may be a chatbot. Adam Fry, ChatGPT's consumer product lead, says its volume of search-like queries is now "roughly one-fifth" of Google's, about a year and a half after search launched. Bing holds around 5% of the market. ChatGPT went from 1 billion to 1.2 billion weekly users in two months, and Fry says people now search it for "a person or people or a place or a thing"... and a hotel counts as a place.

TECH INSPIRATION
5 Steps to More Direct Bookings

Direct bookings come down to five jobs: getting found, answering fast, winning groups, handling reviews, and bringing guests back. One tool for each.

1️⃣ Buy the traffic the OTAs are buying. Sojern runs search, social and display ads that bring travelers to the hotel's own site.

2️⃣ Answer the question before the guest leaves the page. HiJiffy answers guest questions on the website and messaging apps and turns the inquiry into a booking.

3️⃣ Stop losing groups to slow proposals. Tripleseat turns event inquiries into signed group contracts without spreadsheets and email chains.

4️⃣ Treat reviews as marketing. MARA replies to online reviews in minutes and lifts the ratings that decide the next booking.

5️⃣ Make the second stay cheaper than the first. Journey brings guests back for repeat stays through a loyalty program the hotel runs itself.

How Lark Scales Boutique Service to 50 Hotels

Lark Hotels runs 45 to 50 boutique hotels across 13 states, some with as few as six rooms. Scot Hopps, Lark's SVP of Operations, wants directions, check-in and keys handled by tech ("let that be tech driven") so staff can read whether a guest is in town for a funeral or a celebration. Owners see the same numbers Lark does, because late or messy reporting costs an operator the next project... "the humans are still the important piece."
