GOING DEEPER

1. Sabre Sells Hospitality Business to TPG for $1.1B

The last 10-years have been brutal for Sabre with the stock dropping more than 90% since it’s peak in 2015. Sabre is exiting the hospitality tech space, announcing the sale of its Hospitality Solutions unit (including the widely used SynXis platform) to private equity firm TPG for $1.1 billion. The deal is expected to close by Q3 2025. While relatively ubiquitous, Sabre’s Hospitality business has struggled under the broader Sabre umbrella for some time - while there’s always risk in private equity transactions this unbundling has the potential to breathe new life into the business.

🎯 Why it matters: Sabre Hospitality which mostly consists of SynXis products has had a ‘for sale’ sign on the door for years leaving the business in limbo and facing increased competition from all angles. If you’re a Sabre customer you should monitor product innovation and service levels closely over the next 12-18 months. Private equity is known to cut costs and add debt to businesses (ironically the reason why Sabre is selling the hospitality GBU) which has notoriously hurt products and services at many portfolio companies. Having said that, TPG has a stellar reputation and track record so they could have more in mind than just a simple “lever and flip” play.

🔑 Key takeaway: Even as a standalone, Sabre Hospitality is one of the top 5 or 10 biggest software players in the hospitality space. This sale is another major data point around industry consolidation and restructuring that’s happening right now. This sale is mostly designed to help the parent company pay down debt but TPG likely sees the exciting growth happening in this space with companies like Cloudbeds, Mews, Lighthouse and Canary starting to get to scale and thinking they can help Sabre tap some of the exciting market growth and innovation. We wouldn’t be surprised to see more M&A from the combined Sabre Hospitality/TPG once the sale is complete. Read More →

2. OpenAI Adds Shopping to ChatGPT - Are Hotels Next?

OpenAI has rolled out new shopping features for ChatGPT, integrating product recommendations, visual listings, and direct retailer links into its search functionality. The upgrade aims to streamline users’ shopping experiences while keeping results organic and ad-free — and it shows that OpenAI is focused on competing with Google for shoppers’ clicks. These new features are now accessible to all ChatGPT users.

🎯 Why it matters: With AI-driven shopping becoming more integrated into daily life, ChatGPT's new features shed light into the future of transactional LLMs. After watching the shop-able LLM experience it’s easier to imagine how companies like OpenAI may plan to attack the travel market next.

🔑 Key takeaway: The AI evolution is happening quickly but hoteliers should monitor changes heavily but only worry a little for now. Many of the concepts from SEO are similar in LLM optimization and ChatGPT shopping really isn’t so different from Google Shopping. It’s also another data point reinforcing what I’ve believed for some time - that LLMs are going to build out ad networks very similar to what Google has today. Read More →

3. 57% of Consumers Say Influencers Affect Their Travel Decisions

A new survey from Dynata highlights the increasing role of social media influencers and pop culture in shaping travel decisions. 57% of travelers say influencers directly affect their choices, and 18% relying heavily on influencer recommendations. Additionally, destinations featured in popular TV shows like The White Lotus have seen significant booking spikes, underscoring the power of media exposure. Travelers are increasingly expecting tailored recommendations across activities, dining, and offers, with 61% of travelers saying they value personalized recommendations.

🎯 Why it matters: Social media is now a driving force in travel, with influencers and pop culture shaping guest decisions. Hotels must adapt by leveraging these trends and offering personalized experiences to stay competitive.

🔑 Key takeaway: Hotel marketers should consider strategic influencer partnerships, highlight media appearances, and generally think about how break through the noise and be a part of the conversation on social media. Travel marketing seems to be getting more and more complex due to increasingly diverse traveler needs and behavioral patterns. Read More →
